Key Elements of Droplet Isolation

  • Implement Respiratory Hygiene
  • Providers wear a surgical mask if they are:
    • Within 3 ft. of a patient with resp. illness or acute meningitis
    • Performing a throat or nasopharyngeal swab
  • Patients are placed in private room
  • Hand hygiene
  • Examples of infections spread via droplet route: influenza, pertussis, pneumonic plague, N. meningitidis
