Respiratory Hygiene: The Basics

  • Respiratory hygiene prevents the spread of infection in healthcare and public settings
    • Coughing patients are asked to wear surgical masks
    • Signage and staff encourage patients to use tissues, “cover their cough” and perform hand hygiene
    • Alcohol gel is provided in waiting areas
    • Coughing patients are placed promptly in clinic rooms
