Post-Exposure Protocol

  • First aid by washing site with soap and water, or irrigation of mucous membranes
  • Notify immediate supervisor
  • Go to Occupational Health Clinic on UNMH off 5E with name and MRN of patient
  • After hours, notify administrative nursing supervisor of name of patient, and MRN and go to ER
  • At VA, go to Employee Health on 4A or ER
  • Do not let outpatients leave facility
  • Must follow up at Employee Occupational Health (Family Practice Building) after initial visits at OH, ER or VA EH or ER for
    • Workmen’s Compensation documentation - must be reported within two weeks of injury
    • Follow-up lab work regardless of source status
    • 6 month follow-up essential to rule out exposure to seronegative patient in window period
