What Are the Risks Associated with Bloodborne Pathogens?

  • HIV: infects approx 1.1 million in US
    • Many are unaware of their HIV serostatus.
  • Risk of HIV infection
    • Approx. 0.3% with high-risk needlestick exposure (hollow-bore needle recently in artery or vein of patient)
    • Approx 0.09% with mucous membrane splash
    • Risk of infection after exposure is reduced by prompt antiretroviral prophylaxis
