Risks of Bloodborne Pathogens

    • About 0.3% of US population are chronic Hep B carriers
    • Blood from Hepatitis sAg positive patients is highly infectious
  • Best protection is vaccination
  • All healthcare workers should be tested for immunity after three doses of vaccine
  • Routine boosters not recommended for healthcare workers
  • Hepatitis C seroprevalence rates
    • 1.3% of general U.S. population
    • 3% of general population in New Mexico
    • 85% in injection drug users in New Mexico
  • No vaccine or post-exposure prophylaxis
  • Risk of infection after needlestick injury 0-10% in different studies
  • Early treatment of healthcare workers found to be infected with Hepatitis C on follow-up after exposure may be effective
