Types of ionizing radiation
- Gamma and x rays are photons with no mass or charge that travel at the speed of light
- Gamma rays often accompany alpha and/or beta decay
- X rays result from events in the electron cloud and from the deceleration or deflection of charged
particles as they pass by nuclei (bremsstrahlung) - Gamma and x rays are highly penetrating and therefore an external hazard
