Immunization: Statement of the Issue

  • Vaccines are among the greatest health achievements in all of medicine
  • 75% of children in the US received all recommended vaccines
  • In adults > age 65, 64% received influenza vaccination and 50% received pneumococcal vaccination
  • Both influenza and pneumococcal immunization rates are significantly lower for African American and Hispanic adults than for White adults
  • Barriers include lack of and misinformation and lack of recommendations from health care providers
