Substance Use - Alcohol: Brief Provider Interventions

  • Screen or ask specifics of alcohol use
  • Provide information/feedback/advise about safe drinking levels and patient’s drinking behaviors
  • Assist patient in setting goals to decrease problem drinking
  • Provide additional contact or follow up information
  • Refer patients with alcohol dependence to specialty substance use treatment resources
  • Even brief clinician advise (10 minutes) in non-mental health care settings has been shown to decrease drinking levels in patients with problem drinking
