Physical Activity: Brief Provider Interventions

  • Ask all patients about their physical activities; include types, duration and frequency
  • Provide 1 or 2 reasons why this may benefit the patient and tailor this to the individual whenever possible
  • Patients value (most of the time) provider interest and recommendations; “write” a prescription for physical activity; walking is an activity most people can participate in
  • Follow up!! If you see the patient back, ask if/how they have been able to increase their physical activity
  • Most providers find this takes no more than 2 minutes
