Physical Activity: Statement of the Issue

  • Recommended amounts of physical activities vary but a target of 30 minutes per day on most days is a generally accepted guideline
  • Less than 65% of adolescents engage in 20 minutes of vigorous physical activity 3 times/week
  • Less than 15% of adults engage in 30 minutes of moderate physical activity 5 days/week
  • 40% of adults engage in no meaningful physical activity
  • Women generally are less active than men at all ages
  • People with lower incomes and education are not as active as those with higher incomes and education
