What Kind of Respiratory Protection?

  • For airborne infection to which the healthcare worker has immunity (varicella or measles), surgical mask is adequate
    • Surgical mask is adequate for all infections spread by droplet route
  • For TB, OSHA mandates use of N-95 particulate respirator with fit-testing
  • For emerging infections with high risk of transmission to healthcare workers, N-95 is recommended by CDC e.g. SARS, smallpox
