Biological Hazards: Part 1, Bloodborne Pathogens

  • Healthcare workers may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens in blood and other potentially infectious material (OPIM)
    • Via needlesticks and other sharps injuries
    • Via splashes to the mucous membranes of the eyes or mouth
    • Via contact of non-intact skin with blood or other potentially infectious material
    • (Note: All body fluids except sweat may be potentially infectious)
