Seems Simple, Right? Then Try Your Hand at These Scenarios……

As a busy intern on the medical inpatient service, your senior resident asks you to get a few more blood tests on Mr. Jackson, a 79 year old patient who is admitted for dementia versus delirium. It is now 3 pm. His 78 year old wife is at his bedside most of the time except for a short break between 4 and 6 pm every day.

Your next step:

  1. Call upstairs and have his nurse enter a verbal order for the labs so you can get them as quickly as possible.
  2. Do A and ask the nurse to let his wife know that there will be an additional blood draw today.
  3. Quickly run upstairs to catch his wife before she leaves and let her know about the blood draw this afternoon.
  4. Sit down with his wife when you have enough time to explain each of the extra tests and why you would like to obtain them. Ask her permission to draw the additional tests.
