Age of Majority Differs for Different Circumstances

In NM Adult is...

  • 21 for drinking
  • 18 for voting, medical care, sex or contracts
  • 14 for psychiatric care
  • 13 for sex with partner within 4 years of patient’s age (statutory rape / child abuse if partner is over)
  • 13 for family planning, STDs and pregnancy-related care

Children Become Adults If...

  • Married (ever)
  • Active Duty Military (current)
  • Emancipated by Court
