As healthcare costs rose in the mid-1980s, public reporting
sprang up in communities such as Minneapolis and Cleveland in response
to employers demands for data on which to base healthcare purchasing
decisions.
- Several state level initiatives followed in Maryland,
Iowa, Pennsylvania and others
- Reported data focused on volume, cost, length of stay
and severity adjusted outcomes
- Several local initiatives folded as costs bottomed
out. Pennsylvania still publishes data at http://www.phc4.org/reports/hpr
