Managed Care and HMOs

Managed health care began in Minnesota in 1969 when a pediatric neurologist, Paul M. Ellwood, MD, left the practice of medicine to initiate national health reform. Dr. Ellwood coined the term health maintenance organization (HMO) and helped craft the market-based managed competition approach to health care reform that was started in the 1970s.
