Patient Safety as a Multi-ACGME Competency Issue

  • “Medical Knowledge”
    • Human Factors analysis is the “science” behind patient safety/adverse events analysis (as microbiology is the “science” behind infectious disease)
  • “Patient Care”
    • Quality/competent patient care is safe patient care
  • “Interpersonal and Communication Skills”
    • Deficits in communications between caregivers, patients and families contribute to adverse events
  • “Professionalism”
    • We have a professional responsibility to improve the safety of the care we provide, and the settings in which we provide that care
  • “Practice-Based Learning and Improvement”
    • Analysis of patterns of care from patient safety/quality improvement perspective
  • “Systems-Based Practice”
    • Systems in which we function (not just our individual performance) contribute significantly to safety and quality of clinical care we provide
