Substance Use - Alcohol: Statement of the Issue

  • 20% of adolescents ages 12-17 report drinking alcohol in the prior month:
    • 8% report binge drinking
    • 3% report heavy drinking (> 5 drinks/occasion at least 5 of the past 30 days)
  • 17% of adults report binge drinking in the past 30 days
  • Only 23% of binge drinkers who had a medical appointment in the previous year report that the physician had discussed their drinking
  • Most excessive drinkers are not alcohol dependent
