Handling Suspicious Mail

  • What is suspicious mail?
    • Unusually bulky or uneven contents in envelope
    • Envelope or package sealed with large amounts of tape and/or string
    • Stained or odorous packaging
    • Handwritten or misspelled address
    • Incorrect address, no recognized return address
    • Ticking sound
  • DO NOT shake or empty the contents of any suspicious envelope or package
  • DO NOT try to clean up powders or fluids
  • COVER the envelope or package with anything (e.g., clothing, paper, trash can, etc.) and DO NOT remove this cover.
  • LEAVE the room, CLOSE the door, call for help
  • On leaving the room, remove outer clothing and place in a plastic bag that can be sealed; (possible later investigation)
  • WASH hands with soap and water to prevent spreading any powder to your face or skin.
