How to Apply Extended Precautions

  • Rapidly assess the patient for infectious syndromes and institute syndromic isolation pending definitive diagnosis
  • Note:
    • Rapid institution of appropriate isolation prevents healthcare worker exposure
    • Placing a mask on patients with respiratory complaints and covering any skin lesions will minimize exposure from most conditions pending placement in the appropriate room
    • Additional precautions can always be withdrawn as diagnoses are excluded
