Principles of Standard Precautions

  • Use in all patient care regardless of the patient’s diagnosis or risk factors
  • Use personal protective equipment as needed to prevent exposure
  • Do not eat or drink in patient care areas
  • Perform hand hygiene before and after every patient contact and after removing gloves
  • Use safe sharps practices
