JCAHO – Outcomes Measures

  • Not until 1997 did JCAHO incorporate the use of outcomes and other performance measures into the accreditation process
  • Current indicators are evidence-based and relate to high-volume, high-risk diagnoses or procedures. The number of indicators required increases annually
  • UNMHSC reports indicators to JCAHO, CMS, and University Health Systems Consortium (UHC) for benchmarking:
    • Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI)
      • Aspirin at arrival; Aspirin prescribed at discharge; ACEI for LVSD; adult smoking cessation advice/counseling; beta blocker prescribed at discharge; beta blocker at arrival; time to thrombolysis; time to PTCA; inpatient mortality
    • Heart Failure
      • Discharge instructions; LVF assessment; ACEI for LVSD; adult smoking cessation advice/counseling; oxygenation assessment
    • Pneumonia
      • Pneumococcal screening and/or vaccination; blood cultures; adult smoking cessation advice/counseling; pediatric smoking cessation advice/counseling; antibiotic timing
