Demings’ Principles of Quality Improvement
(and Relevance to Patient Safety/Clinical Quality Improvement)

  • “Traditional” model for industrial (clinical) quality improvement – evaluating products (results) at the end of the production process (episode of care) - is inefficient and wasteful
  • The key to improving quality (good patient outcomes) lies in improving the production process (clinical care processes); improving the performance of individual producers (caregivers) has less impact
